How It All Began
Benner Builders officially launched in 2019, but the foundation for our business was laid decades earlier. When the home builder Gary worked for closed its doors, what seemed like a daunting challenge became an unexpected opportunity. That same year, Jacob left an unfulfilling career to join forces with Gary, inspired by his father’s craftsmanship and commitment to the trade.
For Gary, growing up in a household led by an electrician naturally sparked his interest in construction. Early maintenance work during high school further refined his skills and passion for the industry. Jacob’s journey was shaped by his upbringing in a trades-focused home and later solidified during his time in Midland Public Schools’ Building Trades program under the mentorship of Kevin Dodick.
A Family-Forward Partnership
Working together as a father-son team has shaped not just how we approach projects, but also how we treat our clients. Jacob, the visionary, handles much of the office work and planning, while Gary, the integrator, grounds the business with his hands-on expertise. Together, we share roles seamlessly, creating a unique synergy that clients often notice and admire.
Many clients have commented on how well we work together—some even find it surprising. They expect the occasional father-son bickering, but instead see a team that can anticipate each other’s next move without speaking. For us, this dynamic isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about bringing our family values into every project, ensuring our clients feel like part of that family.

One of our recent projects, the “Mid-Century Master,” perfectly illustrates this philosophy. Inspired by the home’s original mid-century modern architecture, we’ve reclaimed natural wood materials and reimagined them throughout the space. The result? A home that retains its 1950s charm while embracing modern functionality and design.
Overcoming Challenges and Growing Together
Starting a new business is never easy, but our journey has been one of perseverance and collaboration. From Gary’s decision to start the company in 2019 to Jacob joining in 2021, we’ve faced challenges with resourcefulness and teamwork. Communication, cleanliness, and attention to detail have been the bedrock of our client relationships, earning praise like “the cleanest contractor we’ve ever hired.” It’s these principles that have driven our growth and continue to guide us today.
Looking Ahead
The future for Benner Builders is as exciting as it is ambitious. We’re expanding our team, planning to hire two to three additional members by the end of 2025, to improve project flow and efficiency. We’re also breaking into the new home construction market, combining Gary’s experience building 25+ homes with Jacob’s fresh perspective. Together, we aim to create energy-efficient, healthy spaces that reflect each client’s dreams.
But growth isn’t just about numbers. For us, it’s about continuing to lift the quality of work in the industry and raising the expectations clients have of contractors. We’re dedicated to building relationships that last, just like the homes we create.
